Last week, I embarked on a captivating babysitting mission alongside my niece and her five-month-old baby with three others. As five of us boarded the flight to Mumbai, little did we know that our journey would mirror an ancient tale from the depths of mythology — a story of an unwavering protector safeguarding his beloved charge from perilous danger! Inspired by the epic Srimadbhagavatham, where lieutenants follow Lord Vishnu to rescue Gajendra, the elephant, from the clutches of a menacing crocodile, our story unfolds as four adults come together to nurture and guide the oblivious infant through the bustling streets of Mumbai.
Our arrival in Mumbai, a torrential downpour that matched the rhythm of our racing hearts welcomed us. Fatigue crept upon us, and we carried a unique set of thoughts during our journey to Vikhroli. My niece pondered her complex business case, my sister fretted over baby food supplies, and my nephew considered what the next two days held for him. Meanwhile, the baby slept serenely, unaware of her surroundings and the purpose of our grand adventure.
As our cab meandered through the labyrinthine roads, I couldn’t help but notice the vibrant tapestry that adorned the city’s landscape. The imagery from the iconic Hindi movie CID came to life before me, evoking a sense of wonder and nostalgia. “Ae dil hai mushkil jeena yaha, zara hatke, zara batch ke, hai Bombay meri jaan…” The enchanting lyrics echoed through my mind as I marvelled at the transformation that had swept over the city.
In ancient days, Mumbai thrived as the city of ‘cloth’ — a bustling hub of textile mills on seven hilly islands. The construction of fifty-five flyovers in the seventies, with hammers and picks wielded by dedicated labourers, promised an improved infrastructure. The traffic situation remained unaffected, with cars bringing traffic jams more efficiently than ever. Today, the city continues to evolve, with new metro lines under construction, generating fresh waves of traffic congestion. A journey that once took thirty minutes from the airport to Vikhroli now stretched into an arduous ninety-minute ordeal. Sleek, modern car models have replaced the iconic Fiats that dotted the streets. The skyline has transformed, with towering high-rise buildings replacing the once-majestic Victorian architecture. My favourite restaurants have become a rarity as the landscape succumbs to the dominance of streaming platforms, with Netflix and Prime adorning the vast hoardings that once showcased the dreams of cinema.
Yet, amidst the rapid urbanization and the loss of architectural heritage, Mumbai exudes an unmistakable energy — an indomitable spirit that permeates the air. The city remains a melting pot of dreams, where hitmen, dancing girls, cops, movie stars, poets, beggars, and politicians all hold their stories close. The echoes of significant events like Black Wednesday, the Bombay riots of ’92 and ’93, and the 2008 attacks linger in our memories. But true to its resilient nature, Mumbai swiftly rebounds, rallying its people with an unwavering sense of positivity.
Within the bounds of Mumbai lie hidden gems, such as the enchanting Kala Ghoda, the grand Asiatic Library, and the majestic Prince of Wales Museum. Alongside these treasures, pockets of adversity like Mahim and Dharavi are testaments to the city’s ongoing battle for victory. Yet, amidst the chaos, Mumbai offers a luxury that transcends all others — the luxury of solitude — a precious respite from the clamour and commotion.
Finally, as our enthralling journey ended, the five-month-old baby still slumbered blissfully, her dreams intertwined with the vibrant spirit of Mumbai. As we reached our destination, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness Mumbai’s ever-changing landscape.
With its rich tapestry of history and unyielding spirit, Mumbai continues to captivate and inspire. It is a testament to the human capacity for adaptation and resilience in rapid transformation. From the dynamic mills of old to the high-rises that now pierce the sky, Mumbai’s story is one of constant evolution.
As the baby peacefully slept, cradled in the heart of this vibrant metropolis, I couldn’t help but marvel at the immense power within the city’s boundaries — the ability to weave dreams, rewrite destinies, and forge a path towards an extraordinary future.
