Divali delights and Canine insights
A Festive Invitation!
Last week, a delightful invitation came my way — a Divali dinner at my neighbours Anurag and Shayli’s home. What a charming couple they are, with their young son, Adi! My daughter and I, the exclusive guests, were welcomed into a world of vibrant colours. Anurag in his blue and white sherwani, Shayli in a stunning red and white ensemble, and little Adi, a miniature prince in blue, white, and gold! Their smiles were as bright as the Divali lamps adorning their home.
A Feast for the Senses
The dining table was a sight to behold! A lavish spread of Maharashtrian delicacies, including my all-time favourite, Pootha Rekulu. Adi and my daughter played as we nibbled on starters; their laughter mingled with the festive air.
A Canine Surprise
Curiosity got the better of me, and I inquired about their pets. Anurag, initially hesitant, soon let Coco and Cleo, their dogs, join the celebration. Oh, the excitement! Coco and Cleo, one black and white, the other brown and white, were bundles of joy, wagging tails and offering enthusiastic licks.
Cats vs. Dogs: A Reflective Comparison
My mind wandered to Archie and Mili, two cats I had recently spent time with. What a contrast! While the cats were embodiments of calm, Coco and Cleo were whirlwinds of energy, craving attention and affection. Unlike the independent felines, these dogs enjoyed our company, staying close even after a loving pat.
Lessons from Coco and Cleo
Firstly, their boundless energy amazed me. How do they maintain such vigour with their routine lives? Secondly, their behavior post-interaction was noteworthy. After a brief petting session and expecting treats, they retreated for a nap. Such simple joys!
Childhood Memories: A Tale of Street Dogs
This encounter took me back to childhood when I observed the street dogs near my home. My mother, a kind soul, fed them daily. I remember their disciplined gathering, the inevitable scuffles, and the occasional monkey trying to steal their meal. It was a daily spectacle for us kids, unaware then of the harsh realities of survival these creatures faced. My mother’s second serving ensured even the less dominant dogs didn’t go hungry. Those dogs, in their way, guarded our home, barking at strangers, a display of unexpected loyalty.
An Unfinished Tale
As the evening progressed, filled with warmth, laughter, and the spirit of Divali, I couldn’t help but ponder over the lives of these animals. Their simple existence, yet complex emotions, left me wondering about the many untold stories they carry within them. Just as I was about to ask Anurag more about Coco and Cleo’s past, the changing colours of the Empire State Building grabbed our attention, drawing us to the window.
And there, in the sparkling night sky, I realized that every light, like every creature, has a story — some told, some untold, and some waiting.
